Books: Marvel Comics goes Chick Lit…and it’s AWESOME.

OUT TODAY:  (Tuesday, June 18, 2013) are two of Marvel Prose’s (a division of Hyperion) are THE SHE-HULK DIARIES by Marta Acosta and ROGUE TOUCH by Christine Woodward. Each novel centers around the title heroines, and bring new life to an already vibrant franchise.

THE SHE-HULK DIARIES hits a light, contemporary voice without losing any of the Marvel-ous comic book environment. It’s the perfect juxtaposition of BRIDGET JONES on a splash page, with dead-on dialogue, both between characters and our occasionally green narrator. I haven’t finished this one yet, but believe me, I’m hooked. And also jealous at the apparent ease Marta Acosta has with bringing Jennifer/Shulky into her first truly three-dimensional role. Beyond that, Acosta’s working knowledge of NYC made me feel right at home, and longing to return. And eat from food carts.

ROGUE TOUCH shifts gears and brings us to Jackson, Mississippi, where we find our X-Woman — or girl — before even Mystique does. Gracing the canon by remembering Cody Robbins but veering off to explore a previously untouched part of her life (pardon the pun, and also, as far as I know–I’m hardly an X-pert), author Christine Woodward tells an equally strong story, although it’s very, very different stylistically. Bordering somewhere between Young Adult and New Adult, this take on Anna Marie captures the mideast settings in a beautifully realistic way. As I’m from the Southeast, it’s so easy for me to taste, feel, and hear this book.

“A fun, escapist romantic romp with superheroes—who can resist?” – Kirkus

“Acosta offers a fresh and lively take on a comic book heroine in The She-Hulk Diaries. Jennifer /Shulky is lovable and funny. With a sizable dash of adventure and romance to spice things up, this is a good choice for the comic-book nerd as well as the light romance reader.” –

“She-Hulk is sweet and funny and will delight readers whether they’re into superhero comics or not.” – Booklist

“An absolute delight… Whether you like She-Hulk straight up, comedic, or a combination of both, SHE-HULK DIARIES is the She-Hulk endeavor for you.” – Peter David, long-time writer of The Incredible Hulk, She-Hulk and X-Factor and author of Pulling Up Stakes

“It takes a lot of creativity to write a love story with a heroine who can’t touch her lover, not to mention bridging a 10,000-year age difference and two vastly different home planets. Amazingly enough, Woodward succeeds, putting a fresh spin on Rogue, a Marvel Comics X-Men regular, in this entertaining and thoroughly original romance.” –

“The author delivers a romantic, action-packed plot that is imaginative and emotionally textured.” – Kirkus

“Fans of the X-Men and any reader who enjoys a strong female lead will want this volume.” –

“A lost chapter from Rogue’s past, told with elegance and conviction and attention to detail. Really entertaining.” – Mike Carey, author of the Felix Castior novels and writer of X-Men: Legacy

“An interesting take on Rogue, as her powers take her down a path I never would have imagined.” –Chris Claremont, co-author of Dragon Moon and writer for seventeen years of Uncanny X-Men
